DarWIN or LOSE (2021-23)
Overwhelmed by news reports of the state of our world, I retreated into David Attenborough animal documentaries that led into a rabbit hole of inferior versions of animal footage. My intention was to escape into the beguiling and savage members animal world, but I only found parallels to the cruelties I was escaping. Mother Nature has inspired me to create artworks that draw on the similarities between humans and animals, especially in our desires to attract mates, and to assert control over our environment.

Daydream During a Plague (2020-23)
The California state-wide “shelter-in-place” order during the Covid19 Pandemic summoned past spectres of the AIDS epidemic that haunted me as a young man. During the height of Covid19, someone left a copy of The Book of the Dead on my doorstep, and through it, I relived the fascination for Ancient Egypt that I had experienced as a young child. I began experimentations to fuse my own past and present anxious loneliness to these hypnotic and bewildering protocols surrounding Egyptian deathliness.
This collection of artworks utilizes rendering, photographic, and printmaking methods to construct a neo-Egyptian aesthetic that seeks to make sense of the chaos that has been the Covid19 Pandemic.

I Wanna B a Cowboy (2018-20)
What constitutes an authentic interpretation of the American Southwest? And how do past artistic visions of this expansive and diverse area of the United States create challenges for the inhabitants who dwell there?
I set off in search of a series of holy trinities: the real-life, legendary and fictional personae; the naturalistic, idealized and fictive landscapes; the good, the bad and the ugly.
My art-making process has been guided by previous fine artists, photographers, filmmakers, craftsmen, and designers who documented their perceptions towards the American Southwest. As the title of this series suggests, my imagery is rooted in the concept of “playing cowboy”, and its subsequent impact upon “outsiders” who navigate personal relationships to these historical tropes in order to adjust to the shifting cultural norms of this highly contested space. Inspired by Southwestern avatars directly taken from fine art reproductions, cinematic publicity stills, playing cards, action figurines, animal sculptures, and dolls, I have directly referenced these objects in order to draw attention to the problematic cultural, political and sociological tropes that they have additionally generated.
Compositions within this series are “staged” through the process of layering my original photographic and hand-rendered imagery with stock photography and digital textures; final output includes combinations of mixed media, including drawing, painting, printmaking, sculpture and assemblage. Print series are a limited run of 3-10 per image.

Stars, Hide Your Fires (2017-20)
William Hazlitt described Shakespeare's Macbeth as "an unruly chaos of strange and forbidden things, where the ground rocks under our feet.” Stars, Hide Your Fires takes its name from a textual fragment with this play, and depicts a world cloaked in shadows and roiling with atmospheric dynamism. The chaos of the natural and political worlds in Shakespeare's Kingdom of Scotland mirrors today's crisis of national identity.
This series of paintings, photographs, assemblage, and mixed media takes on MacBeth's themes of kingmaking, fortune, the glimmering world that exists beyond everyday reality, and the idealization and theatrical performance of violence.
Stars Hide Your Fires was presented as a solo exhibition at the Foundry Art Centre, St. Charles, MO from May 8–June 19, 2020.

Reimagining the Four Freedoms (2018-2020 Exhibition Tour)
Official Press Release:
Art Work by Brandin Barón, of San Francisco, CA, Selected for Inclusion in Major Traveling Exhibition
Organized by Norman Rockwell Museum
Artists Called Upon to Reimagine the Four Freedoms and Provide Contemporary Interpretation For Enduring Ideals: Rockwell, Roosevelt & the Four Freedoms
In early 2017, the Norman Rockwell Museum in Stockbridge, Massachusetts, sent out a call to artists to create works that would reimagine President Roosevelt’s Four Freedoms—Freedom of Speech, Freedom of Worship, Freedom from Want, and Freedom from Fear— or explore the meaning of freedom today, for possible inclusion in the major touring exhibition: Enduring Ideals: Rockwell, Roosevelt & the Four Freedoms. A distinguished jury of curators, scholars, artists, and historians reviewed approximately 1000 submissions from artists across the United States and countries around the world. They selected 37 works by 36 artists for the contemporary section of the exhibition, titled “Reimagining the Four Freedoms.”
Rockwell, Roosevelt & the Four Freedoms opens at the New-York Historical Society, in New York City, on May 25, 2018, and the companion section ”Reimagining the Four Freedoms” will be on view simultaneously across Central Park at Roosevelt House Public Policy Institute at Hunter College.
Support for Reimagining the Four Freedoms has been provided by the Ford Foundation.
Overview of Exhibition
The first comprehensive exhibition devoted to Norman Rockwell’s iconic depictions of Franklin Delano Roosevelt’s Four Freedoms, Rockwell, Roosevelt & the Four Freedoms explores how the 1943 paintings came to be embraced by millions of Americans, providing crucial aid to the War effort as they brought the public together in defense of universal human rights. In addition to Rockwell’s celebrated paintings, the exhibition includes numerous other examples of painting, illustration, photography, and more, by both Rockwell and a broad range of his contemporaries—from J.C. Leyendecker and Mead Schaeffer, to Ben Shahn, Dorothea Lange, and Gordon Parks, among others—as well as historical documents, videos, and artifacts; interactive digital displays; and immersive settings. While exploring the response of an earlier generation to the paintings and what they stood for, the exhibition, with the juried selection of contemporary works, also resonates with our own time.
Rockwell, Roosevelt & the Four Freedoms and its seven-city tour are organized by the Norman Rockwell Museum. The exhibition has been co-curated by Stephanie Haboush Plunkett, Deputy Director and Chief Curator, Norman Rockwell Museum, and James J. Kimble, Ph.D., Associate Professor of Communication & the Arts, Seton Hall University. Additionally, a National Advisory Board, comprising scholars, artists, and museum professionals, has provided guidance and expertise for the exhibition.
Reimagining the Four Freedoms
For this section of the exhibition, artists were asked to consider what freedom means today and to provide a contemporary interpretation of the notions of freedom enunciated by Roosevelt in 1941 and painted by Rockwell in 1943. The selected artworks include painting, sculpture, drawing, photography, video, and mixed media.
Ms. Plunkett says, “The story of Rockwell’s images of the Four Freedoms and their success in uniting the American public, continues to resonate, perhaps rarely more powerfully than today. We are thrilled at the enthusiastic response to our call to artists. The diversity of ideas, styles, and mediums in the works that will be shown in the exhibition is a testament to the breadth and power of the very idea of freedom.”
Additionally, the selected works will be featured on the exhibition website; and will join a global discussion of art and ideas about the expression and meaning of freedom in today’s world, using #FourFreedomsToday.
Artist Statement:
Brandin Barón, The Four Freedoms in the Style of Pontormo (2017), photomontage on cotton paper with gouache, pastel, ink and enamel, 16x20”
I have been drawn to the tobacco and ochre tones in Rockwell’s work since I was a young artist copying his images from dog-eared Saturday Evening Post editions. In creating a piece for the Re-Imagining the Four Freedoms, I was interested in conceiving a response to his Golden Rule, (1961)—an exceptional and innovative work in the history of portrayals of ethnic diversity—by fusing Rockwell’s color palette to spatial complexities in Pontormo’s Joseph in Egypt (1517-8). My goal was to create a dialogue between the realistic human figures and the memorialized forms of historicized American leaders and edifices through the use of color and perspective, as a means of illustrating the trans-historical legacy of the Four Freedoms. My deceased maternal grandfather served as inspiration for rendering one of the doctors, and my beloved Golden Gate Bridge serves as a beacon of inspiration in this work, as in my daily life in San Francisco.
Exhibition Jury
The jury reviewed over approximately 1000 submissions from around the world and included:
· Liza Donnelly, cartoonist and writer for The New Yorker, which has featured her cartoons about culture and politics for over 30 years.

· Anita Kunz, award-winning illustrator who has been appointed as an Officer of the Order of Canada, Canada’s highest civilian honor, by her Excellency the Right Honourable Michaëlle Jean, Governor General of Canada.

· Maurice "Pops" Peterson, visual artist, author, and Artist in Residence of the Massachusetts Commission Against Discrimination.

BIrthright (2014-18)
There is nothing more savage than a tourist at a hotel breakfast buffet.
I am extremely interested in questions surrounding lineage, heirlooms, shared histories and mythologies and how these are presented to tourists and the residents who intersect in these European travel destinations. What of the travel experience is authentic? How inspired are Americans of European descent to find an accurate memory of their ancestry; can "you go back" again? What remnants of a former homeland remain links to a descendant’s past? In trying to document the process of travel, how much do we miss? How has the spread of information through digital technology and social media provided an almost complete expectation in the anticipation of how to view travel sights? What is the role of a tourist in a site?
These compositions are created through a fusion of photographic and hand-drawn layers, composited in Photoshop, and printed onto vellum. Additional layers of ink and varnish are applied through experimental printmaking techniques to achieve the final finish.

Gods and Monsters (2015-17)
This series involves portraits of contemporary personalities that have been reimagined into historicized, fictive spaces, summoning narratives from Homer’s The Odyssey. Mirroring my work as a scenic and costume designer, these compositions are “staged” through the process of layering my original photographic and hand-rendered imagery with additional digital textures. I utilize experimental printmaking techniques, especially in the play between different surface qualities of ink/paint/pigment.
Aesthetically, the works are inspired by Colorforms™, an iconic children’s toy. Characterized by highly chromatic design palettes, in Colorforms™, die-cut stickers rendered in efficient graphic styles can be applied (and reapplied) to glossy backgrounds. The intended user has the ability to change the significance of the pictorial objects by placing them in unexpected positions. A design flaw of the toy occurs when the forced perspective of the background is violated by objects placed outside of areas determined by the vanishing point. This accepted “clunkiness” in Colorforms™ feels akin to Odysseus’s disorientation throughout The Odyssey, and also parallels the challenges of restaging the proportional differences between Odysseus to gods and monsters in the work.
Through a Colorforms™ approximation of Homer’s epic poem, I investigate the volatile, gossipy, fame-hungry gods and the vast universe that they rule, itself a tribute to the great beauty of its bounty. Gods and Monsters is my attempt to render the myriad interpretations of the stories in The Odyssey through the crossing of cultural themes including: celebrity; appropriation; the diversity of representational identities; political upheaval and unrest; advertising, tropes from art history; figurative and landscape art painting techniques; and the transformative power of digital technology to combine and manipulate these disparate ideas.

Apotheosis (2013-5)
In 2013, I spent two months in Istanbul in the wake of the Taksim riots. I was inspired to draw, paint and photograph the diverse tensions that encompass that city: old and new; religious and secular; traditional and innovative. This research and development has defined Apotheosis, a series of 18 photo-illustrations that create narratives around Turkish daily life, both imagined by my outsider-eye, and through interviews and collaborative photo-exchanges between friends and acquaintances that I made during my stay.
Mirroring my past scenographic work in theater design, these artistic compositions are “staged” through the process of layering imagery, following in the vein of Max Ernst’s landmark series, une semaine de bonté (1934). I am currently analyzing the levels of illusion in the technical registration to affirm to the viewer that the narratives are staged, as opposed to creating “naturalistic” photographs that hide the illusion of the collages. Original sketches and photographs are combined with stock imagery in Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator to create multi-layered compositions, upon which I add additional artistic marks using gouache, metallic ink, transparencies and oil wash to further define the existing textures in the photos.
